Leaders of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning group of atomic bomb survivors warned Saturday (Oct. 12, 2024) that the danger of nuclear warfare was rising, renewing their name to abolish nuclear weapons.
“The worldwide scenario is progressively worsening and wars at the moment are being fought as nations threaten using nuclear weapons,” stated Shigemitsu Tanaka, a survivor of the 1945 US bombing of Nagasaki and co-director of the group Nihon Hidankyo.
“I concern that we, as humanity, are on the trail to self-destruction. The one option to cease it’s to abolish nuclear power,” he stated.
In awarding survivors, the Norwegian Nobel Committee highlighted the devastation of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Japanese group’s decades-long work to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
The group’s efforts are critically vital in at this time’s world, the committee stated. No nation was specified.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled final month that Moscow would think about responding with nuclear weapons if america and its allies permit Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia with long-range Western missiles.
