Double world champion Francesco Bagnaia has gained his third consecutive Austrian MotoGP Grand Prix to finish a dream weekend of dash racing and take the general lead of the world championship.
Jorge Martin, who got here into the weekend on the prime of the drivers’ standings, needed to accept second place, whereas Enea Bastianini accomplished the rostrum on the Purple Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg, Austria, on Sunday.
Bagnaia’s seventh win of the season on the official Ducati bike equals his tally from final season with 9 races remaining.
Martin had secured pole place for Sunday’s race and took the lead after the beginning.
By the second lap, Bagnaia had snatched the lead from Martin and, regardless of the Spaniard’s efforts to remain shut, he was by no means capable of problem for first place.
Bagnaia ultimately crossed the end line of the 28-lap race greater than three seconds forward of his essential title rival Martin.
The Italian’s victory on the Austrian MotoGP now places him 5 factors forward of Martin within the riders’ championship (275 to 270). Bagnaia’s Ducati teammate Bastianini is third within the standings with 214 factors.
The subsequent Aragon Grand Prix in Spain will happen in a fortnight.
