Iran summoned the chargé d’affaires of the German embassy in Tehran on Thursday to stage a protest after Berlin mentioned it could shut three Iranian consulates in Germany.
A International Ministry assertion condemned the transfer as an “irrational resolution” that “can’t be justified” and mentioned Germany’s envoy was summoned to convey Iran’s “robust protest.”
The German ambassador in Tehran, Markus Potzel, had already been recalled to Berlin for consultations.
Earlier on Thursday, German International Minister Annalena Baerbock mentioned the nation will shut all three Iranian consulates on its territory in response to Iran’s execution of German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd.
“We now have repeatedly and unequivocally made it clear to Tehran that the execution of a German citizen may have severe penalties,” Baerbock mentioned, asserting the closure of consulates in Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg in a televised speech.
Sharmahd, 69, had been sentenced to demise in February 2023 for the capital crime of “corruption on Earth”, a sentence later confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Courtroom.
He had been convicted of collaborating in a bomb assault on a mosque within the southern metropolis of Shiraz in 2008, wherein 14 individuals had been killed and 300 injured.
His household has lengthy maintained that Sharmahd was harmless.
“The German authorities’s resolution to shut these facilities intentionally deprives Iranians of the advantage of consular services and providers,” the International Ministry assertion mentioned.
