Pakistani anti-terror authorities have arrested an al-Qaeda chief, Amin ul Haq, who’s on a UN sanctions listing, they stated on Friday, describing him as a detailed affiliate of the late Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 assaults in the US.
Pakistan’s first arrest of al-Qaeda members in years comes because the counter-terrorism division (CTD) of its most populous province, Punjab, registered a authorized case towards Haq, accusing him of planning to sabotage key installations there.
He didn’t establish his precise plans or amenities.
“In a major improvement within the combat towards terrorism, the CTD, in collaboration with intelligence companies, efficiently arrested Amin ul Haq, a senior chief of Al Qaeda,” the division’s spokesman stated within the assertion.
“His identify is included in a UN terrorist listing,” he added.
Pakistan’s Inside Ministry didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
In its listing, which dates again to January 2001, the United Nations sanctions panel towards ISIL (Daesh) and Al Qaeda identifies the arrested man as Amin Muhammad ul Haq Saam Khan, calling him bin Laden’s safety coordinator.
He was listed for his affiliation with teams affiliated with bin Laden’s al-Qaeda or the Taliban, contributing to or supporting actions equivalent to “supplying, promoting or transferring arms and associated materiel to them,” the panel stated.
Bin Laden was killed in 2011 throughout a US raid on his hideout within the northern Pakistani metropolis of Abbottabad.
